FBI warns of dramatic rise in financial sextortion targeting minors
Guardii Analysis
The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center issued a public service announcement in October 2024 warning of a dramatic increase in financial sextortion schemes targeting minors, particularly boys aged 14 to 17. The agency reported that perpetrators, often operating from West Africa and Southeast Asia, use social media platforms and gaming applications to deceive victims into sharing explicit images, then threaten to distribute the material unless payment is made. The bureau recorded thousands of reports in the past year, with at least 20 deaths linked to sextortion-related suicides among minors.
Real-time anti-sextortion detection closes the operational gap between first contact and crisis. Guardii's sextortion module intercepts the signature escalation arc—compliments and trust-building followed by image requests, then threats and payment demands—across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord and Roblox, flagging the pattern before a child shares compromising material or faces extortion. By surfacing a conversation in distress to a parent or school counsellor without exposing the content itself, the platform enables intervention at the moment of coercion, not after a threat has been carried out or payment extracted.
