FBI targets global sextortion rings amid teen suicide

Guardii Analysis

The FBI reported a 30 percent increase in sextortion-related tips between October 2024 and March 2025 compared to the previous year, with reported victims rising from 34,000 in 2023 to 54,000 in 2024 and over 65 million dollars transferred to perpetrators in the past two years. Operation Artemis, a coordinated effort with law enforcement in Canada, Australia, Nigeria and the United Kingdom, resulted in 22 arrests in Nigeria, with nearly half directly connected to American victims who died by suicide. The majority of victims are boys aged 14 to 17.

When cross-border criminal networks operate at this velocity and scale, detection must be faster than the threat cycle. The Startmate-backed Guardii platform surfaces acute distress and suicide-risk signals in real time, identifying the combination of financial demand, threat escalation and expressions of hopelessness or self-harm intent that characterize high-lethality sextortion cases, alerting a parent or professional the moment a child moves from compliance to crisis and enabling emergency escalation to the FBI, NCMEC or local law enforcement while evidence of the offender's contact and payment instructions is still intact.
