FBI reports surge in financially motivated sextortion targeting minors

The FBI issued a public safety alert on 4 September 2024 warning of a sharp increase in financially motivated sextortion schemes targeting minors, reporting that the bureau received over 12,600 reports of online financial sextortion of minors in the twelve months to July 2024, a significant rise from prior periods, with at least 20 victims dying by suicide after being coerced. The agency noted that offenders, often operating from Nigeria and Ivory Coast, use fake profiles on social media and gaming platforms to befriend young people, quickly move conversations to platforms with less moderation, manipulate or trick victims into sharing explicit images, and then threaten to distribute the material unless payment is made, with the entire cycle sometimes occurring within hours.
