FBI reports sharp rise in financially motivated sextortion targeting minors

The Federal Bureau of Investigation issued a public warning following a documented increase in financially motivated sextortion schemes targeting children and teenagers, predominantly boys aged 14 to 17. Offenders, often operating from overseas, use social media and gaming platforms to establish contact, manipulate victims into sharing explicit images, then threaten exposure unless payment is made. The FBI reported thousands of cases in the past year, with at least 20 victims taking their own lives after being coerced. Platforms including Instagram, Snapchat and Discord were identified as common points of initial contact.

Sextortion follows a predictable behavioural arc—rapid establishment of false intimacy, solicitation of imagery, followed by escalation to threats and financial demands—that unfolds within the message exchange itself long before a payment is attempted or harm reported.
