FBI reports record sextortion complaints targeting minors with over 12,600 cases in 2023

The FBI has reported that it received more than 12,600 complaints of financially motivated sextortion targeting minors in 2023, a significant increase from previous years, with at least 20 victims dying by suicide following extortion attempts. The bureau states that offenders, many operating from West Africa and Southeast Asia, use social media platforms and messaging apps to contact children, pose as peers, obtain sexually explicit images through manipulation or coercion, and then threaten to distribute the material unless the victim pays, with cases typically escalating rapidly and many victims targeted across multiple platforms simultaneously.
