FBI Reports Record Sextortion Cases Targeting Minors, 12,600 Reports in 2023

Guardii Analysis

The FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center released data on October 18, 2024, showing it received over 12,600 reports of financially motivated sextortion targeting minors in 2023, a sharp increase from prior years, with at least 20 suicides linked to these schemes. The bureau noted that offenders typically pose as young women on social media platforms including Instagram and Snapchat, manipulate victims into sharing explicit images, then threaten to distribute the material unless payment is made, often within hours of first contact, and that many cases go unreported due to victim shame and fear.

Financially motivated sextortion operates on speed and isolation, exploiting the gap between first contact and the moment a victim seeks help. Automated detection shortens that window: Guardii's anti-sextortion module identifies the characteristic escalation of coercion, image solicitation and financial demand in real-time direct-message exchanges, flagging the threat to a parent, school counsellor or platform safety team while the conversation is still active. The approach surfaces a child in acute distress before a crisis point, enabling intervention during the critical hours when offenders exert maximum pressure and victims are least likely to disclose the harm voluntarily.
