FBI Reports 67 Percent Increase in Financial Sextortion Cases Targeting Minors
Guardii Analysis
The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center has published statistics showing a 67 percent year-on-year increase in financial sextortion reports involving minors, with 12,600 cases recorded in 2025 compared to 7,500 in 2024. The data indicates that most attacks begin on social media platforms through direct messages, with offenders using fake profiles to initiate contact before coercing victims into sending explicit images and demanding payment under threat of distribution. The report identifies Instagram, Snapchat and Discord as the most frequently cited platforms in victim reports.
Financial sextortion follows a recognisable sequence: rapid escalation, requests for images, and the shift to threats—a pattern that unfolds in direct messages before a victim realises the danger. Guardii's anti-sextortion detection module is designed to intercept that sequence at the earliest stage, identifying coercive language and escalation dynamics in real time across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord and other platforms. By alerting a parent, school or authority to the shape of a hostile conversation without requiring surveillance of every message, the platform addresses the operational gap that the FBI data makes clear: sextortion is preventable, but only if the warning signs are detected before the harm is done.
