FBI Reports 67% Increase in Financial Sextortion Cases Targeting Minors

Guardii Analysis

The FBI has released data showing a 67 percent year-over-year increase in reported financial sextortion cases targeting minors, with over 12,600 cases reported in the past year and at least 28 confirmed suicides linked to these schemes. The bureau reports that offenders primarily operate through Instagram, Snapchat and gaming platforms, often posing as peers to initiate contact before coercing victims into sending explicit images and then demanding payment under threat of distribution.

Financial sextortion follows a recognizable escalation sequence: rapid relationship-building, requests for imagery, followed by threats and payment demands, a pattern detectable before imagery changes hands. Guardii's anti-sextortion detection module identifies these behavioral signatures in real time across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord, Roblox and other platforms where the FBI reports contact originates, flagging conversations that exhibit coercion, secrecy or escalation to financial demands and blocking hostile messages before they reach the child. When a threat is detected, the system surfaces the conversation to parents or safeguarding staff and enables immediate escalation to law enforcement, intercepting the harm at the point of contact rather than after images have been shared or a child is in acute distress.
