FBI Reports 47 Percent Increase in Financially Motivated Sextortion Complaints Targeting Minors
Guardii Analysis
The FBI and Department of Homeland Security issued a national public safety alert on 19 August 2024 reporting a 47 percent year-on-year increase in financially motivated sextortion complaints involving minors, with over 12,600 reports received and at least 20 deaths by suicide linked to these schemes in the 12 months to March 2024. The agencies identified organized criminal networks, primarily operating from Nigeria and West Africa, as the principal actors, using fake social-media profiles to contact victims on platforms including Instagram, Snapchat and gaming sites before moving conversations to encrypted messaging services.
When sextortion moves across platforms and into encrypted channels, conventional content moderation loses line of sight. Guardii's cross-platform anti-sextortion module tracks the conversation arc—flattery, image solicitation, threat escalation—across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord and other services in real time, flagging coercive demand patterns and acute distress signals to parents, schools or law enforcement before a child complies or self-harms, offering precisely the continuity of protection that offender tradecraft is designed to evade.
