FBI Reports 47% Increase in Online Child Sextortion Cases Targeting Minors

The FBI has reported a 47 percent year-on-year increase in financially motivated sextortion cases involving minors, with more than 12,600 victims reported in the past year and at least 28 confirmed suicides linked to these schemes. The bureau notes that offenders increasingly operate from West Africa and Southeast Asia, targeting boys aged 14 to 17 through gaming platforms, social media direct messages and dating applications. Perpetrators pose as young women, obtain explicit images, then threaten to distribute them unless victims pay, often demanding cash via payment apps or cryptocurrency.
