FBI Reports 322% Increase in Financial Sextortion Cases Targeting Minors

Guardii Analysis

The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center reported a 322 percent increase in financial sextortion complaints involving minors between January and September 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, with over 7,000 reported incidents and at least 27 suicides linked to these schemes. Offenders, predominantly operating from Nigeria and Ivory Coast, target boys aged 14 to 17 on Instagram, Snapchat and gaming platforms, using fake profiles to solicit explicit images before demanding payment under threat of distribution to the victim's contacts. The Bureau identified coordinated criminal networks using scripted tactics and cryptocurrency payment channels to evade detection.

Guardii's anti-sextortion detection engine is built to intercept precisely this escalation pattern: the initial contact from an age-mismatched or suspicious account, the progression from casual conversation to image solicitation, the pivot to coercion and financial demand. Operating as a Meta Business Partner across Instagram and other messaging platforms, Guardii flags the behavioral signature of sextortion in real time, alerting a parent, school safeguarding officer or the child directly before images are shared or threats issued, and enabling immediate escalation to law enforcement where a coordinated criminal operation is identified. The system detects threat patterns rather than reading every message, surfacing a child in crisis without creating a surveillance burden.
