FBI reports 300 percent increase in financially motivated sextortion cases targeting minors
Guardii Analysis
The FBI issued a public warning on 25 September 2024 reporting a 300 percent increase in financially motivated sextortion cases involving minors between 2022 and 2023, with more than 12,600 victims reported and at least 20 suicides linked to the crime. The schemes typically begin on social media or gaming platforms where offenders, often operating from abroad in organized networks, pose as peers to coerce children into sharing explicit images and then extort money under threat of distribution, with the Bureau urging parents and platforms to increase vigilance.
Sextortion operates at speed, compressing coercion, image exchange and escalation into hours or minutes, which is why intervention must occur during the conversation rather than after the fact. Guardii's anti-sextortion module detects the characteristic progression of financial extortion in real time within direct messages on Instagram, Snapchat, Discord and similar platforms, recognising coercive language, rapid escalation and demands for money or imagery, then blocking further contact and alerting a parent, school counsellor or crisis responder while the child is still in the exchange. A world-leading AI platform and Meta Business Partner, Guardii is designed to surface the child in acute distress before compliance or self-harm, converting the FBI's warning into operational protection at the point where the threat is actually unfolding.
