FBI reports 300 percent increase in financially motivated sextortion targeting minors

The Federal Bureau of Investigation issued a public warning on 11 September 2024 reporting a 300 percent year-on-year increase in financially motivated sextortion cases targeting children and teenagers, with more than 12,600 reports received in the first eight months of 2024 compared to fewer than 3,000 in the same period in 2023. The bureau identified organised criminal groups, primarily operating from Nigeria and West Africa, as responsible for the majority of cases, in which offenders pose as peers on social media and gaming platforms, manipulate victims into sharing explicit images, and then extort money under threat of distribution. The FBI linked the trend to the growing use of artificial intelligence tools to generate and manipulate imagery, and urged parents and educators to discuss the threat openly with young people.
