The Federal Bureau of Investigation disclosed that reported incidents of financially motivated sextortion targeting children and adolescents have surged by approximately 300 percent between 2021 and 2024, with thousands of victims identified and at least two dozen associated suicides documented. The Bureau attributes the spike to organized criminal networks, primarily operating from West Africa and Southeast Asia, that systematically contact minors on gaming platforms, social media and messaging applications, coerce them into sharing explicit imagery, and then extort payments under threat of public release.
Sextortion follows a predictable escalation sequence—initial rapport-building, a request for imagery, followed by immediate threat and demand—that trained detection algorithms can recognise and interdict within the first exchanges.
