FBI reports 26 percent increase in sextortion cases targeting minors

Guardii Analysis

The FBI has reported a 26 percent increase in reports of financially motivated sextortion targeting minors over the past year, with more than 18,000 reports received and at least 40 victims taking their own lives. The agency notes that offenders typically operate from overseas, often posing as young women on social media and gaming platforms, and use coercion and threats to extort payments after obtaining explicit images. The FBI emphasises that many cases go unreported due to victim shame and fear.

Sextortion follows a recognizable escalation pattern: rapid relationship-building, requests for images, followed by threats and demands for payment. Detection systems that monitor for coercion, urgency, and financial demands in direct messages can identify these sequences as they develop, surfacing a child in crisis to a parent or authority before self-harm becomes a risk. Guardii's anti-sextortion module operates in real time across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord, and other platforms to flag conversations exhibiting these hallmarks, blocking hostile contact before it reaches the target and enabling rapid escalation to law enforcement or safeguarding professionals when a threat is imminent, addressing the underreporting gap the FBI identifies.
