FBI Reports 25 Percent Increase in Financial Sextortion Cases Targeting Minors

The FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center reported a 25 percent year-on-year increase in financial sextortion complaints involving minors in the first half of 2024, with over 2,800 cases reported and at least 15 suicides linked to the crime. Sextortion follows a recognizable pattern of escalation: rapid relationship-building, requests for images, followed by immediate coercion and payment demands, a sequence detectable before the threat is issued.
