The FBI announced on 14 August 2024 that reports of financially motivated sextortion targeting minors increased 23 percent in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, with over 2,800 cases reported and at least 14 suicides linked to the crime. The bureau highlighted that offenders, often operating from West Africa and Southeast Asia, use Instagram, Snapchat and gaming platforms to pose as peers, solicit explicit images and then threaten to distribute them unless the victim pays, typically via cryptocurrency or gift cards.
