FBI Reports 144 Percent Increase in Financially Motivated Sextortion Targeting Minors

Guardii Analysis

The FBI has released new statistics showing a 144 percent year-on-year increase in reports of financially motivated sextortion targeting minors, with more than 12,600 victims reported in the past twelve months and at least 28 suicides linked to these schemes. The bureau reports that perpetrators, often operating from West Africa and Southeast Asia, use social media platforms and gaming services to pose as peers, solicit explicit images from children and adolescents, and then extort payment under threat of distribution. The FBI has urged parents, educators and platforms to increase awareness and implement stronger safeguards, noting that many victims do not report the crime due to shame and fear.

Sextortion moves faster than a report: by the time a parent discovers a demand or a child summons the courage to disclose, the image has been sent, the threat has been made, and the psychological harm is done. Guardii's anti-sextortion detection module intercepts the scheme at the grooming and coercion phase, identifying language patterns, escalation tactics and requests for images or payment in real time, blocking the message before a child complies and immediately alerting a parent, school counsellor or law-enforcement contact, enabling intervention at the moment of highest risk rather than after the fact.
