FBI Reports 12,600 Sextortion Victims in 2023, Predominantly Teenage Boys
Guardii Analysis
The Federal Bureau of Investigation documented over 12,600 sextortion reports involving minors in 2023, an increase from prior years, with victims predominantly male teenagers contacted on gaming platforms and social media before being coerced into sharing explicit imagery and then extorted for money under threat of distribution. The bureau recorded at least 20 suicides connected to financially motivated sextortion schemes and attributed the majority of cases to organised networks operating from Nigeria and West African countries, using fake profiles to initiate contact on Instagram, Snapchat and gaming services.
Financial sextortion follows a script that advanced detection can interrupt. Guardii's anti-sextortion module identifies the coercion signature—rapid intimacy-building, requests for imagery, followed by threat and payment demand—within the message exchange itself, flagging the conversation to a parent or guardian and blocking further contact from the offender before the victim complies or a payment is extracted, addressing the narrow window between first contact and crisis that the FBI data reveal and that law enforcement, operating after the fact, cannot close.
