FBI Arrests 22 Nigerians in Operation Artemis Global Sextortion Crackdown

The FBI arrested 22 Nigerian nationals as part of Operation Artemis, a coordinated international enforcement surge conducted with law enforcement agencies from Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Nigeria in response to financially motivated sextortion schemes targeting American teenagers. Approximately half of those arrested were directly linked to victims who committed suicide. The operation was launched during a 30 percent increase in sextortion-related tips between October 2024 and March 2025 compared to the same period the previous year, with over 54,000 victims recorded in 2024, up from 34,000 in 2023, resulting in nearly 65 million dollars in financial losses over the past two years. The perpetrators, operating largely from Nigeria, targeted young male victims aged 14 to 17 by posing as peers or romantic interests on social media platforms.

Rapid interception at the point of first contact is the operational principle that could have prevented each one of these crimes.
