Europol Reports 400 Percent Increase in AI-Generated Child Sexual Abuse Material
Guardii Analysis
Europol released a threat assessment on October 21, 2024, documenting a 400 percent year-on-year increase in reports of AI-generated and manipulated child sexual abuse material, with offenders using generative tools to create realistic synthetic CSAM and deepfake images targeting specific children. The agency noted that detection methods designed for photographic content often fail to identify AI-generated material, and that offenders are using these images in grooming and sextortion schemes to coerce real children, creating urgent demand for updated technical countermeasures.
Synthetic abuse material is a tool of coercion as well as a category of illegal content. The Guardii platform's anti-CSAM detection module is trained to identify both photographic and AI-generated child sexual abuse material in direct-message conversations, flagging sharing or threats involving synthetic images before they are weaponised in sextortion or grooming. By detecting threat patterns rather than relying solely on image hash databases, the system surfaces emerging tactics including deepfake coercion in real time, enabling intervention when a predator first makes contact rather than after harm has occurred.
