Europol Report Documents 400% Rise in AI-Enabled Sextortion Targeting Minors Across EU Member States

Guardii Analysis

Europol's 2026 Online Sexual Coercion and Extortion Threat Assessment, published on 20 August, documents a 400 percent increase in reported sextortion cases involving AI-generated deepfake material targeting minors across EU member states between January 2025 and June 2026. The report identifies a proliferation of low-cost nudification applications that allow offenders to create convincing synthetic intimate images from clothed photographs sourced from social media, which are then used to extort victims—predominantly girls aged 13 to 17—for additional explicit material, money or compliance with further abuse. Law enforcement agencies in 18 member states reported that offenders increasingly operate via direct messaging on gaming and social platforms rather than through public channels, complicating detection and requiring real-time monitoring capabilities that most platforms do not currently deploy at scale.

The operational challenge documented by Europol is one of visibility: sextortion unfolds in private channels, often across multiple platforms simultaneously, and the synthetic nature of the initial material means that many victims do not realise they have been targeted until the extortion demand is made. Anti-sextortion detection systems that monitor the direct-message layer for coercive language, extortion demands and image-based threats can flag an approach in progress—before a child complies or suffers acute distress. Guardii's anti-sextortion module scans messages in real time across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord, Roblox and other platforms, identifying the linguistic and behavioural signatures of sexual coercion and extortion, blocking or flagging hostile contact before it escalates, and surfacing a child at risk to a parent, school or professional who can intervene immediately, addressing the gap that Europol identifies as the core impediment to effective response.
