Europol publishes analysis of emerging sextortion tactics targeting minors
Guardii Analysis
Europol has released a threat assessment detailing the evolution of sextortion tactics targeting children and adolescents, noting a shift from opportunistic individual offenders to organized networks using scripted personas, AI-generated profile images and automated follow-up messages to scale victim recruitment. The report identifies Discord, Snapchat and Instagram as the primary platforms for initial contact, with offenders migrating conversations to encrypted apps once trust is established, and highlights that 68 percent of reported sextortion cases in 2025 involved victims under 18.
Organized, scripted tactics exploit the lag between initial contact and platform detection, making reactive moderation insufficient. Guardii's anti-sextortion and anti-grooming detection modules analyze conversation structure rather than isolated messages, recognizing the trust-building, isolation and coercion sequences that characterize both opportunistic and networked offending. Operating across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord and Roblox, the platform intercepts hostile actors at first contact, blocks the conversation before migration to encrypted channels and escalates serious threats to the appropriate authority, collapsing the window in which an offender can establish control.
