Europol Coordinates Takedown of Major CSAM Network Involving AI-Generated Content
Guardii Analysis
Europol has announced the coordinated takedown of a major child sexual abuse material network operating across twelve European countries, which produced and distributed both real and AI-generated imagery depicting the sexual exploitation of children. The operation, conducted in partnership with national law-enforcement agencies and technology companies, resulted in 47 arrests and the seizure of servers hosting more than 200,000 files, including a significant volume of synthetic CSAM created using generative AI tools. Investigators report that offenders are increasingly using AI to generate, modify and distribute child exploitation material, making detection more difficult and enabling rapid production at scale.
AI-generated CSAM does not require a physical victim to appear in the final image, but it still circulates, normalises abuse and is often traded alongside real exploitation material in the same networks and sometimes the same conversations. Guardii's CSAM detection module, designed to identify both photographic and AI-generated child sexual abuse material, operates in real time within direct-message environments across platforms including Instagram, Snapchat and Discord, blocking the transmission of prohibited imagery before it is shared or received and immediately escalating the incident to law enforcement or a safeguarding authority, closing the operational gap that allows synthetic and real abuse material to spread unchecked in private channels.
