Europol coordinates takedown of global sextortion network, 120 arrested across 20 countries

Europol has announced the results of a coordinated international operation that led to the arrest of 120 individuals suspected of involvement in organised sextortion networks targeting children and teenagers. The operation, which ran over four weeks and involved law enforcement from 20 countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Philippines and Nigeria, identified over 500 victims, most of them minors aged between 13 and 17. Investigators report that the networks used social-media platforms and gaming apps to initiate contact, employed sophisticated social-engineering techniques to obtain explicit images, and then extorted victims for money or further material, often sharing coordination tools and victim lists among members.

The arrest phase of an operation represents the culmination of months of intelligence work, but the window for prevention lies in the opening moments of contact.
