Europol coordinated operation arrests 270 in global child sexual exploitation investigation

Europol announced on 5 September 2024 that a coordinated operation across 32 countries resulted in 270 arrests and the identification of 348 suspects involved in online child sexual exploitation and abuse, with law enforcement executing search warrants, seizing devices and digital evidence, and identifying dozens of child victims. The operation, conducted in cooperation with Interpol and national agencies, targeted individuals sharing child sexual abuse material through encrypted messaging apps, peer-to-peer networks and social media platforms, with participating countries including EU member states, the United States, Australia and several nations in Southeast Asia and Latin America.

Large-scale enforcement operations address distribution networks after images have been created and circulated but cannot prevent the initial contact between offender and child. Real-time detection of grooming escalation, coercive solicitation of images, and CSAM sharing in direct-message conversations allows intervention at the point where an adult first targets a child, before abuse material is produced or distributed. Guardii surfaces the child in crisis to the parent, school or professional in the position to act immediately and enables rapid escalation to law enforcement when a criminal threshold is crossed, shifting the intervention window from post-distribution forensic investigation to pre-abuse prevention.
