European Commission Issues Formal Request to TikTok Over Child Safety Measures Under Digital Services Act

Guardii Analysis

The European Commission has issued a formal request for information to TikTok under Article 67 of the Digital Services Act, seeking detailed evidence of the platform's measures to protect minors from harmful and illegal content, including content related to sexual exploitation and grooming. The request follows concerns that TikTok's recommendation algorithms may amplify risks to children and that the platform's age-verification and parental-control tools remain insufficient. TikTok has been given until early November to provide comprehensive documentation of its child-safety systems, risk assessments and mitigation measures, with the possibility of enforcement proceedings and fines if the response is deemed inadequate.

Regulatory demands for transparency and after-the-fact accountability remain one step behind real-time harm. By the time an algorithm is audited or a report is filed, thousands of children have already been contacted, coerced or exploited. Guardii closes that gap: its anti-grooming and anti-sextortion detection modules operate at the message level, identifying escalation, repeated targeting and coercive language as conversations unfold, flagging or blocking contact before a child is manipulated and surfacing the incident to a responsible adult or safeguarding team without waiting for a platform's next quarterly transparency report.
