Child Predators Turn to Open-Source AI to Make Unlimited Illegal Images

Guardii Analysis

The Internet Watch Foundation reported discovering 6,310 realistic AI-generated child sexual abuse images in the first six months of 2026, compared to 4,512 in 2025 and just 13 in 2024. Open-source AI models are enabling offenders to generate synthetic CSAM at scale, with models often trained on real child abuse images to produce new depictions of previously abused victims. The technology allows offenders to create content locally and offline, making platform detection significantly more difficult.

Guardii's anti-CSAM detection module addresses this exponential threat at the point where it matters most: when offenders attempt to share, distribute or weaponize AI-generated material against children. Rather than relying solely on hash-matching of known images, which fails against novel synthetic content, Guardii detects the behavioral patterns that accompany CSAM distribution, including coercive sharing, escalation toward exploitation, and attempts to normalize abusive imagery in conversation. By identifying these threat signatures in real time across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord, Roblox and other platforms, the system surfaces high-risk interactions before synthetic abuse material reaches a child, enabling rapid escalation to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and law enforcement when a real victim may be at imminent risk.
