Australia's eSafety Commissioner reports 400% increase in youth sextortion cases

Australia's eSafety Commissioner released data on 29 August 2026 showing a 400 percent year-on-year increase in sextortion reports involving young people aged 13 to 17, with the majority of cases originating on Instagram and Snapchat. The Commissioner noted that offenders are increasingly using AI-generated explicit images as leverage, and that victims often delay reporting for weeks due to shame and fear of parental reaction, allowing the coercion to escalate.
