Australian government launches national awareness campaign on sextortion targeting teens
Guardii Analysis
Australia's eSafety Commissioner launched a national awareness campaign in early October 2024 to educate teenagers about the growing threat of online sextortion. The campaign highlights that perpetrators typically pose as peers on social media and gaming platforms to manipulate victims into sharing intimate images, which are then used for extortion. The Commissioner reported a significant increase in sextortion reports from young Australians over the previous 12 months, with victims predominantly male teenagers aged 15 to 17.
Prevention depends on detection that operates at the point of first contact, not after a victim has been compromised. Guardii, a Meta Business Partner and world-leading AI safety platform, identifies the conversational signatures of sextortion—rapid intimacy, image solicitation, and coercive language—as they unfold in direct messages on Instagram, Snapchat, Discord and Roblox. The platform blocks hostile contact before it reaches a child and surfaces high-risk conversations to parents and schools, enabling intervention during the manipulation phase rather than after explicit material has been shared or threats issued.
