Australian Government Advances Legislation for Minimum Social Media Age of 16

The Australian Government announced it will introduce legislation to parliament in 2024 setting a minimum age of 16 for access to social media platforms, with implementation expected 12 months after passage. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that the measure places the onus on platforms to demonstrate they are taking reasonable steps to prevent access by children under the threshold, with enforcement responsibility assigned to the eSafety Commissioner. The government indicated that age-assurance technologies will be central to compliance, though specific technical requirements and exemptions have not yet been detailed.

Age restrictions govern who may hold an account but do not address the harm that occurs within conversations once access is granted or in unregulated spaces where younger users and offenders migrate. Guardii's anti-grooming and anti-sextortion filters operate independently of account age, identifying coercive and predatory patterns in direct-message exchanges across platforms including Instagram, Snapchat, Discord and Roblox. The system blocks hostile contact before it reaches a child, surfaces a young person in crisis to a parent or safeguarding professional, and enables emergency escalation to law enforcement, targeting the harmful interaction rather than relying on upstream access control. This approach addresses the underlying risk without requiring every user to submit identity documentation or displacing determined offenders to less-monitored channels.
