Australian eSafety Commissioner reports 700 percent increase in image-based abuse reports involving minors
Guardii Analysis
The Australian eSafety Commissioner disclosed on 22 October 2024 that reports of image-based abuse involving minors rose by 700 percent over the previous twelve months, with a significant proportion involving AI-generated or manipulated imagery created using publicly available nudification and deepfake applications. Commissioner Julie Inman Grant stated that offenders are exploiting generative AI tools to create synthetic explicit images from clothed photographs taken from social media, which are then weaponised in sextortion schemes targeting children and adolescents. The agency called for urgent action by technology platforms to restrict access to nudification services and to improve detection of synthetic child sexual abuse material.
A sevenfold increase in reported abuse reflects both growing offender capability and the speed with which synthetic imagery can be produced and deployed as a coercive instrument during direct-message exchanges. Guardii's synthetic-CSAM detection module is trained to identify the distribution of AI-generated explicit material within conversations, recognising not only the transmission of an image file but the surrounding pattern of threat and escalation that indicates sextortion in progress. Deployed in real time across messaging platforms, the system surfaces children under active coercion to parents, schools or law enforcement before compliance is extracted, addressing the operational gap between the moment an offender introduces fabricated material and the point at which a victim feels compelled to produce real imagery or comply with other demands.
