Australian eSafety Commissioner Reports 38% Increase in Child Sexual Abuse Material Reports in 2023-24

Guardii Analysis

Australia's eSafety Commissioner reported a 38 per cent year-on-year increase in child sexual abuse material reports in its 2023-24 annual report, published 22 August 2024, with the agency processing more than 26,000 CSAM complaints during the period. The report highlights a sustained rise in self-generated abuse material involving coercion and sextortion, particularly targeting teenage boys, and notes that the majority of offenders initiate contact through direct messaging on social media and gaming platforms. The Commissioner also recorded significant growth in image-based abuse complaints, including a sharp increase in reports involving deepfake and AI-manipulated sexual imagery of children.

The concentration of initial contact in private messaging channels underscores the operational value of detection systems positioned at the conversational layer. Guardii's anti-sextortion and anti-grooming modules monitor direct messages in real time across multiple platforms, identifying coercive patterns and flagging high-risk exchanges before self-generated material is produced or transmitted, and its CSAM detection capability extends to AI-generated and deepfake imagery. This targeted intervention model enables safeguarding professionals and parents to act on early warning signals rather than relying solely on post-incident reporting, compressing the window between the commencement of abuse and protective response.
