Australian eSafety Commissioner Orders Discord to Improve Child Protection

Guardii Analysis

Australia's eSafety Commissioner has issued a formal notice to Discord requiring the platform to strengthen child protection measures within 28 days. The notice cites failures to prevent grooming and sextortion in private messages and voice channels, inadequate age verification, and slow response times to reports of child sexual abuse material. Discord must provide evidence of proactive detection systems, improve moderation of direct messages, and demonstrate how it prevents adults from contacting children. The Commissioner noted that Discord's current tools rely heavily on user reports, leaving children exposed during the critical period between first contact and escalation to abuse.

Platforms that depend on retrospective reporting face a structural deficit: the harm has already occurred by the time a user flags it. Real-time pattern recognition reverses that sequence, and Guardii's anti-grooming and anti-sextortion detection modules are designed specifically for the high-risk environments the Commissioner identified, scanning for escalation, manipulation and coercion as a conversation unfolds across Discord and other messaging services. The system blocks hostile contact before it reaches the child, surfaces sustained targeting to a parent or safeguarding lead, and enables rapid escalation to law enforcement when a predator is identified, addressing the notice's core requirement for proactive intervention without requiring Discord to break end-to-end encryption or manually review every private exchange.
