Australian eSafety Commissioner orders Discord to explain child safety protections

Guardii Analysis

Australia's eSafety Commissioner issued a formal notice to Discord on 22 August 2024 requiring the platform to detail within 28 days how it detects, removes and prevents child sexual abuse material and child sexual exploitation or abuse on its service. The regulator cited concerns about Discord's design, which emphasises private messaging and closed servers, and its use by offenders to share illegal material and groom children, with the Commissioner noting the platform had been referenced in more than 140 reports to the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation in recent months.

Private and semi-private messaging architectures present a structural detection challenge for both platforms and regulators, because offending occurs in spaces neither automatic keyword filters nor human moderators routinely observe. Guardii operates at precisely this point of contact: as a Meta Business Partner and Startmate-backed provider, it monitors direct-message conversations in real time across Discord, Instagram, Snapchat, Roblox and other services, using pattern recognition to identify grooming escalation, sextortion coercion and CSAM distribution including AI-generated imagery, and surfacing the threat to the appropriate authority without requiring the platform to surveil every exchange or the child to self-report.
