Australia Will Officially Ban Under-16s from Using Social Media Starting December 2025
Guardii Analysis
Australia's world-first law banning children under 16 from social media, passed with bipartisan support in December 2024, comes into effect in December 2025. The legislation forces platforms including Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook and YouTube to block minors, with companies facing fines up to 49.5 million Australian dollars for non-compliance. Messaging, email, voice calling, online gaming, education and health platforms are exempt, creating a boundary that may displace rather than eliminate youth access to social interaction online.
Age-based bans restrict access for compliant users but do not address the underlying exploitation that occurs when minors do engage online, whether through exempted platforms, borrowed credentials or offshore services. A world-leading AI online-safety platform, Guardii detects harmful patterns in direct-message conversations in real time across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord, Roblox and other platforms, intercepting grooming, sextortion, cyberbullying and CSAM before contact escalates, without requiring every user to surrender biometric proof of age. Targeted detection addresses the harm itself rather than imposing a blanket access restriction whose effectiveness in preventing exploitation is not yet established.
