The Australian Federal Police announced the establishment of a National Centre to Combat AI-Generated Child Abuse Material on 9 August 2024, in partnership with the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation and technology industry stakeholders, to coordinate detection, investigation, and removal of synthetic and deepfake child sexual abuse imagery. The centre will develop technical tools to identify AI-generated CSAM at scale, track distribution networks, and support international law enforcement collaboration, responding to a reported 300 percent increase in AI-manipulated child abuse imagery detected by Australian investigators over the past 18 months.
The surge in synthetic abuse material illustrates how generative AI has industrialized image-based exploitation, lowering the production barrier while multiplying distribution velocity across encrypted and pseudonymous platforms. Detection modules purpose-built for AI-generated and deepfake CSAM, such as those integrated into Guardii's real-time monitoring across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord, and Roblox, intercept both authentic and synthetic imagery before it reaches the child victim or is further weaponized in sextortion campaigns, blocking distribution at the point of contact and enabling rapid escalation to the Australian Federal Police and equivalent agencies with evidence chains intact rather than waiting for post-distribution forensic identification.
