Apple targets apps that hide nudification features until after App Store approval

Guardii Analysis

Apple has updated its App Store guidelines to remove applications that conceal nudification capabilities until after approval, following investigations that documented 46 nudification apps on Apple's App Store and 49 on Google Play, collectively recording 483 million downloads and generating over 122 million dollars in lifetime revenue. Both platforms had classified 31 of these apps as suitable for minors. After the Tech Transparency Project identified the scale of distribution in April 2026, Apple removed 15 apps and Google removed seven, while San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu warned both companies of possible civil penalties under California law.

By the time a parent discovers a nudification app rated as child-safe on a device, coercion or distribution may already be underway. Guardii's anti-sextortion and anti-CSAM detection modules operate at the conversation layer where harm actually occurs, identifying the demand, the threat and the escalation pattern in a direct message before an image is created or shared, surfacing a child under pressure to a parent or school in real time and enabling rapid escalation to law enforcement when synthetic abuse material is being produced or circulated, addressing the exploitation itself rather than the downstream question of which app store hosted the tool.
