AI-Powered Sextortion Schemes Target Families Using Deepfake Images and Social Media Data

The Wall Street Journal reported a case where an unknown number added multiple relatives, including a teenager, to a group chat and shared AI-generated explicit images of a family member to extort money by threatening to release the images more widely. The scheme leveraged publicly available social media photos and AI tools to fabricate convincing pornographic content and to map out family relationships for maximum emotional impact, demonstrating a new level of sophistication in sextortion tactics that no longer requires the victim to have shared any explicit material.

AI-generated deepfake exploitation eliminates the traditional sextortion precondition of obtaining real material from the victim, shifting the threat from leverage over what a child has shared to fabrication of content the child never created.
