A July 2026 report from Arizona highlighted the escalating threat of financial sextortion targeting teenage boys at the start of the new school year, when new classes, friends, and group chats create fresh opportunities for online predators. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children received more than 50,000 reports of financial sextortion in 2025 alone, a form of online blackmail in which offenders obtain sexually explicit material from a child and then threaten to release the compromising content unless the victim sends money or gift cards. The threat has resulted in an alarming number of deaths by suicide, according to the FBI.
