2 Extradited from Nigeria to U.S. to Face Sextortion Charges

Guardii Analysis

The United States Department of Justice announced that two Nigerian nationals, Adebola Festus Adekunle and Mudasiru Afeez Olawale, were extradited from Nigeria on August 27, 2026, to face federal prosecution in Mississippi and North Carolina respectively for financially motivated sextortion of minors that resulted in the deaths of American teenagers. The extraditions are the result of Operation Artemis, an FBI-led international surge targeting sextortion rings operating from Nigeria that involved deploying agents, analysts, and forensic examiners to work alongside Nigerian authorities, with Attorney General Todd Blanche stating that the defendants were arrested in Nigeria as part of a wider operation to apprehend sexual extortionists targeting minors in the United States.

Extradition and prosecution address the final stage of a sextortion crime, but interception addresses the initial contact. Guardii's anti-grooming and anti-sextortion detection operates across the platforms most heavily exploited in these schemes, including Instagram, Snapchat, Discord, and gaming environments, identifying contact from an account exhibiting the operational hallmarks of a financially motivated sextortion offender: newly created profile, rapid relationship acceleration, solicitation of personal contact information to move the conversation off-platform, and pressure to produce explicit content. When the system detects this threat pattern, it can block the hostile contact before it reaches the target or surface the conversation to a parent or school with sufficient context for immediate protective action, disrupting the scheme at the recruitment phase and preventing the escalation that leads to payment demands, exposure threats, and in the most devastating cases documented by Operation Artemis, suicide.
