1 in 5 children across 21 countries have experienced tech-facilitated sexual exploitation and abuse – UNICEF

Guardii Analysis

An estimated 20 million children aged 12 to 17, almost one in five, were subjected to at least one form of technology-facilitated sexual exploitation and abuse in a single year across 21 countries, according to a report released by UNICEF on 3 September 2026. More than half of the abuse occurred on mainstream social media platforms. Less than one percent of all experiences were reported to authorities, indicating a massive gap between the scale of harm and the volume of incidents reaching law enforcement or platform moderation systems. The study surveyed children across diverse geographies and found that technology-facilitated sexual exploitation and abuse is now a global phenomenon affecting children regardless of region or income level.

The UNICEF finding exposes the structural limits of post-incident reporting: children do not report, platforms cannot see what happens in private channels, and by the time a fraction of cases surface the harm is already done. Real-time pattern detection closes that gap at the point of contact. Guardii is an AI online-safety platform that monitors the shape and seriousness of direct-message conversations as they unfold, detecting grooming, sextortion, child sexual abuse material including AI-generated and deepfake imagery, age-inappropriate contact, cyberbullying and abuse, without reading every message. The system blocks or flags hostile contact before it reaches the target, surfaces a child in crisis to a parent, school or professional, and enables rapid escalation to the right authority in an emergency, addressing the harm in real time rather than waiting for a child to come forward after the abuse has occurred.
